How AI Color Analysis Works (and Why It's Private)

The idea of an "AI" analyzing your face can sound a bit intimidating. How does it work? Is it accurate? And most importantly, is it private? We designed our AI Color Analysis tool to be as transparent and secure as possible. Here’s a simple, non-technical breakdown of what happens behind the scenes when you use our tool.

It All Happens on Your Device

This is the most important thing to understand: **your photo never leaves your computer or phone**. Unlike many other online tools that require you to upload your image to a server, our entire process runs locally in your web browser. We use modern JavaScript libraries (like `face-api.js`) that are designed to perform complex calculations on the "client-side." This means we never see, store, or have access to your photo. When you close the page, it's gone forever.

Step 1: Finding Your Face

When you upload a photo, the first thing the tool does is identify the face in the image. It uses a pre-trained machine learning model to detect facial landmarks—the position of your eyes, nose, and jawline. This allows it to isolate your face from the background, ensuring that the color of the wall behind you doesn't affect the result.

Step 2: Analyzing Your Skin's Pixels

Once your face is located, the algorithm focuses on specific areas, like the forehead and cheeks. These spots are generally the best indicators of your true skin color, as they are less affected by shadows. The tool then samples thousands of pixels from these areas and calculates the average amount of red, green, and blue (RGB) in your skin.

Step 3: Determining Your Undertone

Your undertone is the subtle color that lies beneath your skin's surface. To find it, the algorithm looks at the relationship between the red, green, and blue values it just measured. In simple terms:

• If there's a higher proportion of yellow and red, it indicates a **Warm** undertone.
• If there's a higher proportion of blue, it points to a **Cool** undertone.
• If the values are relatively balanced, you likely have a **Neutral** undertone.

Step 4: Assigning Your Season

Based on your undertone, as well as the overall lightness and contrast of your features, the tool classifies you into one of the 12 seasonal color palettes (e.g., "Light Spring," "Deep Autumn"). Each season has a unique set of colors that are known to be flattering.

Step 5: Generating Your Recommendations

Finally, the tool cross-references your seasonal type with our database of color recommendations to provide you with personalized palettes for clothing, makeup, and jewelry. All of this happens in a matter of seconds, right in your browser.
